Remodeling Process: What to Expect From First Call to Final Walkthrough

Most homeowners don’t mind remodeling — they mind the unknowns. How long will this take? Who’s showing up? What happens when we change our mind? How do we avoid surprises?

At Monument Home Group, our process is built to keep things simple: clear steps, clear communication, and clean execution. Here’s what to expect from the first call to the final walkthrough.

Step 1: The First Call (Fit + Direction)

The first conversation is quick, low-pressure, and focused on clarity.

We’ll talk through:

  • What you want to remodel (and why)

  • What “done” looks like to you (style, function, pain points)

  • Your general timeline and priorities

  • A realistic investment range (so we stay aligned)

  • Whether we’re a good fit for each other

Goal: Make sure your project makes sense before anyone wastes time.

Step 2: Consultation + Site Visit (Getting the Real Picture)

If it’s a fit, we schedule an on-site consultation. This is where we move from ideas to real-world conditions.

We’ll look at:

  • Measurements and layout limitations

  • Mechanical systems (plumbing, electrical, HVAC) that impact the scope

  • Structural considerations (walls, framing, subfloors, etc.)

  • Access, protection needs, and logistics (parking, entry points, dust control)

Goal: Confirm what’s possible and what will drive cost, timeline, and complexity.

Step 3: Scope Planning (Defining Exactly What’s Included)

This is where most remodels either go smooth… or go sideways.

We define:

  • What’s included (and what’s not)

  • Materials and finish expectations

  • Any layout changes

  • Prep work required (demo, leveling, repairs, waterproofing, etc.)

  • Allowances vs. exact selections (when needed)

Goal: Remove “gray areas” so you don’t get hit with surprise add-ons later.

Step 4: Estimate + Proposal (Clear Numbers, Clear Assumptions)

You’ll receive a proposal based on the defined scope. We keep it straightforward and readable.

A solid proposal should answer:

  • What work is being done

  • What materials are included

  • How changes are handled

  • The payment structure

  • Timeline expectations (and what impacts them)

Goal: Make it easy to understand what you’re paying for — and why.

Step 5: Selections + Pre-Construction (Decisions Before Demo)

The fastest way to blow up a timeline is making key decisions after work starts.

Before demo, we lock in the big items:

  • Flooring, tile, paint, fixtures, and hardware

  • Cabinetry/design direction (if applicable)

  • Plumbing and electrical details (locations, lighting, etc.)

  • Special-order lead times

We’ll also cover:

  • Start date planning

  • On-site protection plan (floors, dust, pathways)

  • Daily schedule expectations and communication rhythm

Goal: Make decisions early so the project runs fast and clean.

Step 6: Construction Phase (Clean Jobsite, Consistent Updates)

This is where the plan becomes reality. Our priority is to keep the project organized, safe, and predictable.

What you can expect:

  • Work completed in planned phases (demo → prep → build → finish)

  • A clean jobsite standard (not perfect every minute — but controlled)

  • Regular updates so you’re never guessing

  • Fast communication if we hit something unexpected (because remodels sometimes do)

Goal: Keep momentum high and stress low.

Step 7: Changes Along the Way (How Change Orders Work)

Most projects evolve. The key is handling changes the right way.

If you want to adjust something (materials, layout, scope):

  • We document it clearly

  • We price it clearly

  • We align on timeline impact before moving forward

Goal: No confusion, no “he said/she said,” no surprise invoices.

Step 8: Final Details + Punch List (The “Tighten Everything Up” Phase)

The end of a remodel isn’t about the big stuff — it’s about the details.

This phase often includes:

  • Trim touch-ups and caulk lines

  • Paint corrections

  • Hardware adjustments

  • Final fixture alignments

  • Deep clean and site reset

Goal: Finish strong, not just “finish fast.”

Step 9: Final Walkthrough (Confidence, Not Questions)

We do a final walkthrough together to make sure everything meets expectations.

We’ll cover:

  • Completed scope confirmation

  • Punch list items (if any)

  • Care and maintenance basics (especially for tile, grout, and flooring)

  • Warranty or workmanship notes (where applicable)

Goal: You feel good about the result — and you know exactly what was done.

The Bottom Line

A great remodel isn’t just about great craftsmanship — it’s about a great process. When the steps are clear and communication is consistent, the project feels controlled… even when remodeling throws the occasional curveball.

If you’re considering a remodel in the Des Moines metro and want a clean, professional experience from start to finish, we’d be happy to talk.
